Riding a quad bike across the red dunes is one of the most popular add-ons to a Dubai desert safari, and for good reason: you're in control, the landscape is huge and the sand is forgiving. It's also a motorised vehicle on unpredictable terrain, so knowing the rules and basic technique makes a big difference. Here's what to expect on your first ride.

How quad biking in Dubai works

Most quad biking in Dubai happens in designated desert areas outside the city, typically as either:

  • An add-on to a desert safari. You ride for a set time at or near the camp before dune bashing or dinner.
  • A dedicated quad bike tour. You meet at a desert base, get a briefing and ride a longer guided route through the dunes.

You'll usually ride in a line behind a guide, either in a fenced practice area or on a set route. Free roaming across the dunes isn't how licensed tours work, and that's for your safety.

The rules

Dubai's regulations on recreational motorbikes and quad bikes set out a few clear principles:

  • Riders must be at least 16 to ride unsupervised; younger riders only under a guardian's supervision.
  • A protective helmet and appropriate gear are mandatory.
  • Quad bikes may only be used in designated areas, not on pavements, roads or residential areas.

On top of the law, operators set their own limits for age, height, weight and health. Always read the listing and ask if you're unsure.

Quad bike vs dune buggy

Both let you take the controls. They feel quite different.

Safety tips for your first ride

  1. Listen to the briefing. It covers the throttle, brakes, the route and hand signals.
  2. Wear the helmet, properly fastened. Every ride, every time.
  3. Start slow. Sand changes from firm to soft without warning. Build speed only as you get comfortable.
  4. Keep your distance. Leave a few bike lengths between you and the rider in front, so sand spray and sudden stops don't catch you out.
  5. Stay on the route. Unseen drops and soft sand are where accidents happen.
  6. Climb straight, not sideways. Ride straight up and down dune faces. Turning across a steep slope is how quads tip.
  7. Lean into it. Shift your body weight forward on climbs and back on descents.
  8. Stop if you're uncomfortable. Raise a hand and the guide will come to you.

Quad biking with kids and teens

Children often love quad biking, but rules are strict for good reason. Many operators offer smaller bikes for older children in a fenced area, or allow younger kids to ride as a passenger with an adult, where permitted. Teens under 16 must ride under supervision. Tell us ages and heights when you book so we can recommend the right setup. See our family desert safari guide for more.

Pros

  • You're in control and set your own pace within the group
  • Huge open landscape and great photos
  • Easy to add to an evening or morning safari
  • No licence usually needed for guided quad tours

Cons

  • Physically tiring on longer rides
  • Dusty: you'll be covered in sand
  • Age and health restrictions apply
  • Risk of tipping if you ride too fast or turn across slopes

When to go

The cooler months, roughly October to April, are the most comfortable for quad biking. In summer, choose the earliest morning slot you can, or a late-afternoon ride ending around sunset. Midday heat on the sand is punishing. Our best time to visit guide has more detail.

Booking quad biking

You can add quad biking to almost any safari, or book it on its own. If you want to compare options online, a combined quad bike, dune buggy and sandboarding experience is a popular way to try both machines.

Or send us a booking request and tell us how many riders, their ages and how much riding time you'd like. We'll suggest a package that fits.

Final thoughts

Quad biking is the hands-on way to feel the scale of the Dubai desert. Choose a licensed operator, wear the helmet, start slowly and ride straight up and down the dunes. Do that, and it's likely to be one of the highlights of your trip.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum age for quad biking in Dubai?

Under Dubai's regulations for recreational motorbikes and quad bikes, riders must be 16 to ride unsupervised, and younger riders may only ride under a guardian's supervision. Operators set their own rules on top of this, often using smaller bikes or shared rides for children, so check the listing.

Do I need a driving licence to ride a quad bike?

For guided quad biking on a tour, a driving licence is usually not required. Dune buggies are different: many operators ask for a valid driving licence. Always check the specific listing.

Is quad biking dangerous?

Quad bikes can tip over and injuries do happen, especially when riders go too fast or leave the route. Wearing the helmet provided, following the guide and riding within your ability reduce the risk significantly.

How long is a quad bike ride?

It depends on the package. Short rides on a safari can be around 20 to 30 minutes, while dedicated quad tours can last an hour or more. The listing will state the riding time.

Can two people share a quad bike?

Some operators offer double quads or allow a child to ride with an adult. Rules vary, so ask in advance.

What should I wear for quad biking?

Closed shoes, long trousers or leggings, a long-sleeved top, sunglasses or goggles, and a scarf or buff to keep sand out of your face. The operator provides a helmet.
